Many people often inquire about the meaning of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy and what typically occurs during a first session with me. At a high level, the first session is primarily an evaluation of your condition, and getting to know you and your goals better.
As a pelvic health PT, I assist with various issues affecting the pelvic organs and their functions, such as urinary leakage, urgency and frequency of urination, pelvic pain, discomfort during intercourse, erectile dysfunction, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome, among others.
Following a comprehensive review of your medical history and a detailed discussion about your concerns, I usually conduct a physical examination.
This examination includes assessing your posture, breathing patterns, various bodily movements, and the mobility of abdominal and pelvic organs, as well as fascia, muscles, and joints, particularly focusing on the pelvis, hips, abdomen, and spine, although not limited to these areas. With your verbal and written consent, I may perform an internal assessment of your pelvic floor muscles and fascia, which could involve vaginal, rectal, or both types of examination. However, your comfort and safety are paramount, so you can decline an internal assessment until you feel prepared for it.
Following this evaluation, I will provide my assessment of your condition, and together we will discuss and develop an individualized plan of care for you. Time permitting, I may also provide you with a brief Home Exercise Program (HEP).
Please bring comfortable/loose clothing — loose shorts and a T-shirt are ideal. Tights, while they are comfortable clothing, do limit the assessment of joints and muscles properly, so please avoid them. It’s always useful if you can fill out the intake form in as much detail as possible before your appointment so we do not have to spend a lot of time digging into the past medical history. Writing down your medical history in chronological order helps tremendously in creating a comprehensive plan of care. And as Pelvic PTs often say there is nothing as TMI (too much information) when it comes to your pelvic health, so please be as detailed as you need to be.
We operate as an out-of-network (OON) practice, which means we do not engage directly with insurance providers. Therefore, it is important to check if your insurance includes any out-of-network benefits. At this time, insurance companies don't adequately reimburse the time and dedication required for pelvic PT. This leads practitioners to schedule multiple patients per hour, ultimately impacting the quality of care. Opting for an out-of-network provider offers advantages such as fewer clinic visits (typically once a week or every other week, depending on your goals and care plan) and dedicated one-on-one time with the clinician for a full hour. This personalized approach helps clients achieve their goals in fewer visits compared to in-network practices.
Yes we do. Our practice is open to discussing a sliding scale to people who need financial assistance.
Our goal is to make quality pelvic health more accessible to a broader range of clients, promoting equitable healthcare access. We will do our best to adjust our fee structure to accommodate your financial situation. Please call us to enquire about this further.
We are a fee-for-service practice. This means we charge an upfront fee for each session, and then provide a super bill to you that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement (you will need out-of-network benefits).
Please call us if you have further questions about this. Our practice is committed to streamlining this process for you so insurance doesn’t act as a barrier for you to receive medical care.
Yes, I am trained in Craniosacral therapy and use it for nervous system down-regulation routinely in my practice and integrate it with other treatment modalities.
If you are specifically looking for a craniosacral session, we do offer that as well.
I am dual Board-certified in orthopedics and pelvic health, and have practiced as an orthopedic PT for 7 years before entering the realm of pelvic health. So I am happy to help you with any of your orthopedic or sports-related issues/injuries, etc.
Yes, all humans have a pelvic floor. So I am happy to assist if you are seeking help with male pelvic conditions such as pelvic/testicular pain, erectile dysfunction (if related to pelvic floor muscles), hard flaccid, hernias, urinary frequency/urgency, pre/post-prostatectomy rehab, and others.
